Lot Essay

It seems likely that Ma Shaoxian, the nephew of Ma Shaoxuan, worked with his uncle producing studio paintings for many years, only rarely putting out bottles under his own name. Compare the bottle by Ma Shaoxian, dated 1899 and painted with boys at play, from the Blanche B. Exstein Collection, sold in these rooms, 21 March 2002, lot 90.
