FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE FIRST GENERAL HISTORY OF CANADA, and "one of the best works on Canada" (Le Clerc). This English edition comprises a translation of the third volume of Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France (first published Paris, 1744, see previous lot). Father Charlevoix landed at Quebec, and surveyed the French settlements and trade routes along the St. Laurent and Mississippi valleys. His travels among the Indians of Canada relate, in accurate and vivid detail, the tribes' habits, customs, and religious rites.
