EDDY, Mary Baker Glover (1821-1910). Science and Health. Boston: Christian Scientist Publishing Co., 1875.
8o (194 x 132 mm). Errata leaf. Original publisher's black cloth, covers decorated in blind, spine gilt-lettered (minor wear to spine ends and corners, inner hinges tender); folding case. Provenance: Edward Hubert Litchfield (bookplate and his pencil notations; his sale Parke-Bernet, New York, 3 December 1951, lot 357).
FIRST EDITION OF THE PRINCIPAL WORK OF THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MOVEMENT, with the scarce errata leaf and the text uncorrected. Mary Baker Eddy's theories about the relation between health and faith produced a distinctly American religion that proved enormously influential. The first edition was published, with the financial assistance of two faithful students, in an edition of only 1000 copies. Although the book only sold two hundred and thirty five copies in the first few months after publication, its popularity grew dramatically as the book became the textbook for the new religion known as Christian Science. By 1900 over two hundred and fifty editions were published.
"The essence of Mary Baker Eddy's philosophy is that the Eternal Mind is the source of all being, that the duality of mind and matter is an error. There is no matter and, hence, 'disease is caused by the mind alone'. Science is the wisdom of the Eternal Mind revealed through Jesus Christ" (PMM 363). Mrs. Eddy called the first edition her "precious volume" and named it the Bible as the two "impersonal pastors" of the "Mother Church." Grolier American 78; Howes E-42.
