FIRST EDITION. Lozano was the official historian during the height of Jesuit power in Paraguay. He discusses Indian customs and Spanish missionary activities in detail. The large-scale map locates Indian villages (both Christian and pagan) in the Rio de la Plata basin, colonial settlements and missions. This was the site of the historic and controversial Jesuit mission colony in Paraguay in the 17th and 18th centuries. This work was used extensively by Charlevoix in compiling his history of Paraguay. According to Didbin, "A very rare book and in much request." Sabin also quotes the Grenville catalogue: "This description of the Province of Chaco and Countries of Paraguay, by one of the missionaries, is very much esteemed and sought after" (Sabin). RARE: according to American Book Prices Current only two copies have sold at auction in the last thirty years, and one lacked the map. Alden and Landis 733/161; Bell L-424; LeClerc 1906 ("All the more important because it is the only early source for accurate information on the Chaco region (today part of Paraguay and Argentina"); Medina 2890; Palau 142967; Sabin 42598; Vindel, Mapas, p.163.
