PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius -- MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1489-1552). Tabula Europae I. [Basel: 1540 or slightly later]. Double-page woodcut map with contemporary colouring in green and yellow, two panels of text rubricated, marginal annotations in a contemporary hand, Latin text on verso, 319 x 408mm.
Münster's classical map of the British Isles, which appeared in all four of his editions of Ptolemy's Geographia, is contained within a trapezoidal frame with markings of latitude and longitude in the borders. The sea is marked with wavy lines in the manner of medieval maps, and a high-pooped vessel fills the empty space north of Scotland. The two panels of text list the ancient tribes of Britain and Ireland respectively. The contemporary annotator has specified time diffferences at the different lines of latitude. Shirley Maps of the British Isles I, 27.
