ADRICHOMIUS, Christianus (1533-85). Theatrum terrae sanctae et biblicarum historiarum. Cologne: Iodocus Henricus Kramer, 1682. 2° (395 x 255mm). Engraved title, large engraved folding plan of Jerusalem and 11 engraved folding maps. (Marginal tear to title touching engraved border, tear to engaved plan of Jerusalem without loss, heavy browning, lighter on maps, spotting and occasional staining). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine and initial on front cover (some staining and creasing). Provenance: ink numbers and initials on front endpaper.

The delineation of the plan of Jerusalem first appeared in 1584 and is 'THE MOST DRAMATIC AND IMPORTANT OF THE 16TH CENTURY' (Nebenzahl). Adrichomius labelled the walls, the gates and the main buildings which he then extensivly described in the text. Over 250 cities are identified throughout the maps, but the most important historical contribution is the earliest fixing of the 14 Stations of the Cross which are widely accepted today. Until later discoveries in the 19th century Adricomius' plan was the definitive layout of one of the world's most historic cities. The present copy is the 6th edition. Kenneth Nebenzahl.
