Lot Essay

Franz Arthur Bischoff, Austrian born American (1864-1929), studied as an artist in Vienna before emigrating to the United States in 1885 where he lived and worked in New York, utilizing his artistic skills as a decorator in a porcelain factory. In 1900 he visited California for the first time and soon moved to Los Angeles and then Pasadena where he became a plein-air painter. Bischoff's porcelain works from the early 1900s demonstrate the artist's refined painting style and superb mastery of his skill as a craftsman.
