Lot Essay

A further cast brass incense burner attributed to 16th Century Punjab, published in Mark Zebrowski's seminal work on Indian metalwork illustrates the original form that our incense burner would probably originally have had, (Mark Zebrowski, Gold, Silver and Bronze from Mughal India, London, 1997, no. 145,p.123). The floral palmettes inside the openwork lattice on the top half of our incense burner are more typical however of Deccani ornamentation. A bidri basin attributed to the Deccan also published by Zebrowski illustrates a very similar pattern, (Mark Zebrowski, op.cit., no.246, p. 172)
