Lot Essay

The present watercolour depicts Leslie Balfour-Melville about to play his second shot at the first hole at St. Andrews. Included in the galaxy of professional and amateur spectators are 'Old' Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, J.H. Taylor and others, with The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse in the background.
