8o (215 x 138 mm). Half-title. Contemporary half calf (front cover detached, some wear at extremities).

FIRST EDITION, written in response to a request from Professor Thomas Martyn for material for Miller's Gardener's Dictionary. Repton takes a historical approach to its subject in this essay and culminates in a detailed rumination on the aesthetics of landscape gardening. It can be regarded as a follow-up to Repton's Observations on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening which was reprinted, without revisions, at around the same time.
