Lot Essay

Baroness Nelly de Rothschild (1886-1945), née Gabrielle Nelly Régine Beer, was the daughter of Edmond Beer and a great-great-niece of the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. She married Robert Phillipe Gustave de Rothschild, who was a banker and director of the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Nord. Troubetzkoy also sculpted the Baron's portrait and that of one of the family's favourite thoroughbreds. Other commissions from the Rothschild family include the bust of Baron Henry de Rothschild, currently at Museo del Paesaggio, Italy (inv. T n. 313).
