Lot Essay

The Armytage family owned Kirklees Park in Yorkshire. John Armytage was born in 1715 and a companion portrait of his brother, Samuel Armytage (1713-1793), also by Hudson, was sold at Christie's, London, 24 November 1978, lot 60.
