Lot Essay
In 1953 James Woodford OBE RA designed ten bone china beasts to surround the base of the Queen's Vase, a piece commissioned by the British Pottery Manufacturer's Federation to commemmorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Their design was inspired by the carved stone beasts made for King Henry VIII, located at Hampton Court Palace.
In 1955 Minton produced limited edition sets of the beasts, of which this lot is an example.
