Lot Essay
For two jardinières and stands with the same tripartite stem (shape no. 1025) but variant Della Robbia style bowl, see Sotheby's, London, 15 March 1988, lot 208 and The Marilyn G. Karmason Collection, Majolica Auctions, Hatfield, PA, 28 & 29 October 2005, lot 442. The second example is also illustrated in M. Karmason with J. Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, updated 2002, p. 218 and 219. Here the author notes, "the jardinière with the Della Robbia style wreath around its basin and three exquisite Renaissance maiden profiles, qualifies as a powerful piece. As with other Minton designs, there exits in the archive a sketch of a similar triangular pedestal but with a basin surrounded by Renaissance heads and arches and a centerpiece of masks and swags (shape no. 934)". The Sotheby's catalogue entry also lists a potential related design source for a 'triangular jardinière base with variant bowl'. Their entry reads "Mintons pattern book No. 90 (?)". It is possible that one of these designs corresponds directly to the present lot and likely that it corresponds to shape no. 934. A third example with Della Robbia style bowl is also illustrated by V. Bergesen, Majolica: British, Continental and American Wares, 1851-1915, London, 1989, p. 29. None of the examples above have the additional tripartite base applied with lion mask scrolls and enameled CMC monogram.
The basin and cat-mask section also appear as an element of a large maiolica fountain made for the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1855. See P. Atterbury and M. Batkin, The Dictionary of Minton, Suffolk, 1990, p. 108, pl. 16.
