ST NICHOLAS AND THE MIRACLE AT SEA, full-page miniature on a leaf from a Book of Hours, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [southern Netherlands, probably Bruges, c.1470]
98 x 69mm. The miniature on a verso with full-page border, recto blank (slight marginal cockling, remnants of sellotape to upper and lower edges). Gilt and velvet Renaissance-style tabernacle frame, glazed.
This meticulously painted and attractive miniature from a diminutive Hours is likely to have accompanied the suffrage to St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra. Regarded as the patron saint of sailors, the scene showing sailors being saved from the sea is complemented by the inclusion of a mermaid holding a comb and a mirror in the full-page border. The style and format, characteristic of the work of illuminators influenced by Willem Vrelant in Bruges during the 1460s and 1470s, is similar to that of another pocket-sized Hours, Baltimore, Walters Art Gallery (W.177). WITH:
THE PREACHING OF SAN BERNARDINO, miniature on a cutting from a Memoriale, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [Italy, probably Ferrara, c.1475]
Fragment 130 x 130mm; miniature 87 x 80mm (folded and glued down to fit the frame). The miniature, depicting San Bernardino da Siena preaching from a wooden pulpit, is by a follower of Taddeo Crivelli (1425-1479). The style is Ferrarese, and likely influenced by some of the border miniatures in the Bibbia of Borso d'Este. (2)
