A NORTH DEVON SGRAFFITO SLIPWARE INSCRIBED AND DATED HARVEST JUG
1835, BARNSTAPLE OR BIDEFORD
Of conventional form, with pinched flared cylindrical neck and scroll handle with scroll terminal, the pale orange ground with cream sgraffito slip decoration of a radiating sunburst, flanked by a cockerel above flowering branches, and the inscription Come Fill me Full/With Liqour Sweet/For that is Good When/Friends do meet But/pray Take Care/Don't Let me Fall/Least you Lost your/Liquor Jugg and all/William Botwood/was Born the 9th (?) November/1835, the base incised 1837(?)

Lot Essay

A very similar jug to the present lot, bearing the same verse and date is in the Potteries Museum, Stoke-on-Trent. This example, made for Welsh customers, is inscribed 'Iohn & Ann Edwards, Aberistwyth, October 24th 1835' (Museum Accession No. 2764, Twyford Collection).

Another, undated, named for Catherine Davis/Aged 8 years is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession No. 13.27.2).

An earlier jug bearing the same verse, named for Catherine Lewis Aberystwith, Cardiganshire, 1812 was sold in The Sampson and Horne Collection sale, Bonhams London, 28 April 2010, lot 626.
