In the 1920s Nevinson was painting the landscape along the upper Thames, especially around Marlow, the country home of H.G. Wells (whom Nevinson had befriended in 1916). He would drive around the Home Counties, especially Surrey and Berkshire, with his wife Kathleen in a motor caravan of his own design. The treatment of the rippling waves of water in the oil are reminiscent of one of Nevinson's dry points from circa 1922-1923.
