Lot Essay

Guy was a western lowland gorilla born on 30 May 1946 who arrived in London from Paris Zoo on Guy Fawkes night, 5 November 1947. Until his death in 1978 he was one of London Zoo's best-loved residents. He was very gentle and would pick up the sparrows in his cage and look at them before releasing them unharmed. The well known bronze statue of Guy by William Timym is one of the most popular sculptures in London Zoo. The sculpture shows the gorilla on all fours, his knuckles to the ground and his head turned to the right.
