Lot Essay

The design of this fragment relates very closely to that of a vase carpet in the Musée Historique des Tissus, Lyon, 25.385, and reputed to have been in the collection of Friedrich Sarre (Charles Grant Ellis, Oriental Carpets in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, London, 1988, fig.56b, p.201). The drawing in the present example is finer and more elegantly curvilinear, especially in the border.
