Drawings. New York: R.H. Rusell and London: Lawrence & Bullen, 1897. Oblong 2° (294 x 446mm). 61 plates by Remington. (Occasional very light spotting, a few plates with very light pencil lines.) Original quarter cloth over paper-covered boards, bevelled edges, top edge gilt (recased with new endpapers, extremities lightly rubbed and soiled), later quarter morocco clamshell case by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Provenance: ARTIST'S PRESENTATION COPY (ink inscription to:) -- Col. Langhorne (father of Nancy Astor).

FINE ASSOCIATION COPY OF REMINGTON'S ICONIC IMAGES OF THE AMERICAN WEST. 'Remington created an image of the frontier West in his illustrations, paintings, articles, stories, and bronzes that indelibly shaped the perception America had of the people and activities of that region' (ANBO). The presentation inscription reads: 'To my brother of the Bad Night Col. Langthorne from the wreck Frederic Remington Oct. 18 '97'. Chiswell Dabney Langhorne (1843-1919), a veteran of the American Civil War, made his fortune in railway construction. He married Nancy Witcher (Nanaire) Keene (1848-1903) when she was sixteen. Their offspring included Nancy, later Viscountess Astor (1879-1964), society hostess and British politician.
