JAN BLAEU (1596-1673)
Britannia prout divisa fuit temporibus Anglo-Saxonum praesertim durante illorum Heptarchia. [Amsterdam: 1645]. Double-page engraved map with contemporary hand-colouring, French text on verso, 490 x 584mm.
FINE EXAMPLE of this map of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. Prepared by Jan Blaeu for vol. IV of the Atlas Novus, it closely followed Speed's prototype map of 1611. The vignettes flanking two sides are identical in subject matter to those used by Speed, but the execution of each is in the style of 'an unmistakeable Dutch miniature'. Shirley Maps of the British Isles I, 549: 'When coloured in the best contemporary tradition, Blaeu's map is one of the finest available.'
