Lot Essay

The large capital is reputedly cast from a late 18th century marble capital at the Amelienborg Palace, Copenhagen. The capital illustrated second from the top is reputed to be moulded from the circa 1900 cast formerly in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York which was in turn reputed to be cast from a Roman original from the Church of San Lorenzo Fuori la Mura, Rome.
