Lot Essay

Charles-Nicholas Dodin (1734-1803) is today recognized as one of the great, figure painters on Sèvres porcelain of the 18th century. He started his career in 1754 with monochomre putti in clouds. The decoration on the present déjeuner 'porte huilier', marked both with date letter A for 1753-1754 and with painter's mark K for Dodin, must, therefore, be one of his first efforts at figure painting. A bleu lapis ecuelle, cover and stand and a silver-gilt mounted ewer and basin, both similarly decorated in camïeu rose on a lapis ground with similar vignettes, was included in the seminal exhibition on this artist held at the château de Versailles in the Spring and Summer of 2012. 3 and 4.
