A FINE COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY GERMAN BINDING of an important work on 18th-century equitation, paired with a treatise on equine medicine, largely compiled from the writings of various classical authors. The Bellerophon differs from similar dressage and schooling texts of the period in advocating a gentler approach with softer bits than those described in the works of Grisone, Pluvinel and other riding-masters. The Latin translation is by Michael Schuster: the original German text was apparently first published in Ulm in 1674 though most bibliographies give only the present edition. Menessier de la Lance II, 649-651; Lipperheide 2913; Brunet V, 1465; Wells 8293.
