D-M 5223') -- Maggs Brothers, London (description laid-in) -- Himebaugh & Brown, New York (news-clipping dated May 1933 laid-in) -- Louise D. Holton (bookplate by Tiffany & Co., thence by descent and sold:) -- Doyle, New York (28 April 2010, lot 121).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY FROM KING GEORGE V TO TSAR NICHOLAS II, inscribed 'for dearest Nicky with every good wish for Christmas 1910 from Georgie and Mary'. George V had succeeded his Father Edward VII earlier the same year. George and Nicholas were linked by family ties, and by a long-standing friendship. However, in 1917, George feared the possibility of a worker's uprising in England and refused to offer Nicholas and his family safe haven. Isabey's portrait of Napoleon at Malmaison is considered by some one of the best of the French emperor.
