Illuminated manuscript on vellum, 7 pages, 2° (473 x 330mm), the first page with illuminated armorial and foliate borders surmounted by the crowned double-headed eagle, with scroll decoration at foot, the text in gold, other pages with crowned imperial cypher within laurel wreath at head, the sides with attributes of teaching within elaborate foliate cartouches, with gilt scroll decoration at foot, with text in black and gold, the fifth page enclosing an illuminated coat-of-arms in gold and colours, interleaved with oyster moiré silk. (Some light soiling, one inter-leaf loose.) Original blindstamped green velvet boards (spine and extremities slightly worn), with gold-thread cord suspending a wax seal in silver-case, the detachable cover applied with the emperor's crowned cypher within leaf and berry wreath, with maker's mark of Egor Seppe, assay master Dmitrii Il'ich Tverskoi, St. Petersburg, 1841, with two gold-thread tassles.

A GRANT OF ARMS SIGNED BY NICHOLAS I. According to the text, August Pakht commenced his career in 1813 as a teacher in Vol'mar District College (now Valmiera in Latvia), in 1816 becoming College Secretary, and being promoted Councellor in 1819. In 1837 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislas, 3rd Class, for his length of service, and the following year became College Assessor and Inspector for all schools in the district. The silversmith Egor Seppe is recorded working between 1823 and 1848, the assay master D.I. Tverskoi between 1832 and 1850.
