Lot Essay

'In 1997, Liebmann dressed in a cape and mask and roamed the streets of New York. As Batgirl, she appears in a series of her own photographs taken with a long-exposure camera. The sepia colour and unintentional camera tricks - double exposure, silhouetting, fish-eye perspective - make these photographs seem more like stills from early films, and hark back to the 1930s when Batman was invented' (Charlotte Mullins (ed.),Saatchi Gallery: Loan of Art, London, 2006, p. 198)
