CABINET WAR ROOMS. Papers of George Rance, 1939-1969, including a set of four coloured printed plans for the Cabinet War Rooms entitled 'Fortress Defence Scheme', 1 February 1943, marked 'Secret' (later cancelled), on linen, 265 x 322mm, stapled, thirteen documents and one file relating to the wartime functioning of the Cabinet War Rooms, together with post-war correspondence and printed ephemera relating to the C.W.R. and other matters, including a quantity of invitations and programmes relating to the coronation of George VI, the Battle of Britain memorial service, Churchill's state funeral and other ceremonies; and two printed books.
The wartime documents, the majority cyclostyled memoranda, include: a telegram to Rance in retirement at Malvern, 22 August 1939, 'Return to duty at office immediately'; a typescript list of 'Ministers attending war cabinet meeting', 21 October 1939; a memorandum signed by General Sir Leslie Hollis to Rance concerning a trial run of the C.W.R. on 27 July 1940; a note from Roland Harris giving a list of those attending meetings of the war cabinet, with two checklists; a memorandum signed by Captain B.E. Adams, RN, 17 November 1941, 'Grenadier Guards -- Rance's Guard', concerning the use of tallies and passes for the guards; a poem transcribed from Punch, 1942, ironically retitled 'Ode to the C.W.R.?'; notification of New Year's Honours, 1 February 1943, including Rance's MBE; a file of February 1944 on 'Allocation of protected accommodation to staff considered essential' and 'List of non-essential staff', comprising lists and six plans of the sleeping accommodation; memorandum of 3 March 1944 on 'Air Raid Precautions'; five further 'Annexes' relating to sleeping accommodation and bedding at the C.W.R., 23 March 1944; a list of 20 occupants of Room 66 S/B (a women's dormitory), 3 July 1944; an 'Office Notice' of messages on Churchill's birthday in 1945; with a note of 10 January 1949 about the maintenance of sleeping accommodation at the C.W.R., an undated memorandum about the access of BBC engineers, and two others; with a printed gathering of the statistical charts displayed at in the C.W.R. during the war; and seven sheets of lavatory paper from the C.W.R. The remaining correspondence and papers include letters from C.W.R. colleagues congratulating Rance on his M.B.E. (January 1943), and offering thanks after the closure of the C.W.R. in 1945, including two letters by Denis Wheatley (one dated 18 December 1944, about his departure from the Cabinet Office, with an inscribed photograph) others from the map officer Captain Richard Pim, Anthony Bevin, C.R. Thompson and J.M. Martin.
