Lot Essay

Wang Qiao (16th century) was born in Jiading (nowadays Shanghai). As his academic pursuits were unsuccessful, the young Wang renounced the thought of entering the government by passing the imperial examinations and, instead, decided to focus on learning Chinese painting. He particularly excelled at painting flowers, insects and aquatic animals. He was also famed for imitating the landscapes of Mi Fu (1051-1107).
