Lot Essay

The Jacobite Lord Cornbury, eldest surviving son of the 4th Earl of Clarendon, was recorded in Rome between 1730-31, where he met with the Pretender (James Francis Edward Stuart) who appointed him a lord of the bedchamber. His activities were reported to the British government by Baron von Stosch, who was represented in a caricature by Ghezzi sold at Christie's, London, on 3 July 2012, lot 38.
