FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE EMBLEM BOOK, one of the earliest printed in Spain. There are 50 cuts in the second book and 50 in the third. The first book without emblems is devoted to a general discussion of the emblem, 'Imprese', and related subjects. Salloch emphasises 'the charm of the woodcuts which, although naive and unsophisticated, imitate the style of popular art, have a definitely Spanish flair, and are highly original'. SELDOM ON THE MARKET. No copy of the first edition is recorded at auction in on-line ABPC/AE. A second edition was printed in 1591 with colophon dated 1589. Maggs cat. 495, no. 470; Praz 374: 'scarce'; Salvá II, 2080; Palau VI, 116236; cf. Salloch cat. 255, no. 59 (1591 edition).
