GALILEI, Galileo (1564-1642). Dialogo. Dove ne i congressi di quattro giornate si discorre sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo Tolemaico, e Copernicano. Florence: Giovanni Batista Landini, 1632.
4o (218 x 155mm). With the errata leaf and the blank final leaf. Italic type. Etched frontispiece by STEFANO DELLA BELLA, showing Aristotle, Ptolemy and Copernicus disputing, with shipping in the background. Woodcut diagrams. (Lower margin of S1v-2r soiled, minimal browning.) Contemporary Italian vellum. Provenance: Federico Gentili di Giuseppe (booklabel of his grand-daughter Mrs. A.R. Salem) -- Acquired from Hofmann & Freeman 1967.
FIRST EDITION. If the observations described in Galileo's Sidereus nuncius (1610) opened the eyes of the scientific world to verification of Copernican theory, his polemical Dialogo spelled out the truth of heliocentric astronomy and brought the "matematico sopraordinario" of the Lincean Academy before the Inquisition with disastrous results. The book was not removed from the Index until 1822. CRISP COPY, rare in this condition, with the Della Bella etching in a fine early gray-black impression of the fourth state (De Vesme 905). Cinti 89; Dibner 8; Norman 858; PMM 128.
