Lot Essay

The present group is based on a marble sculpture by Pierre Lepautre begun in 1697, placed at the Château de Marly, later moved to the Tuileries and today in the collections of the Louvre (M.R. 2028). Lepautre was, in turn, inspired by a wax model by François Giardon in his possession from 1696 forward.
