The present lot represents one of a pair of figures titled Jongleur and Charmeur de serpents by the celebrated sculptor, Mathurin Moreau (d. 1912). A pair of torchères sold Christie's, London, 20 September 2012, lot 234 and a pair with polychrome decoration, similar to the present figure, sold Christie's London, 12 December 1996, lot 146 (£57,500).
