Lot Essay

In his architectural projects Piet Zanstra oftend integrated art. The present lot is the design for a commission he granted to Karel Appel when he designed the headquarters for the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax offices) in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, in the late sixties.
The design was executed on a large scale: the ceramic mosaic is over thirty meters long and therefore one of Appels largest art works.
