The Botanical Magazine; or, Flower-Garden Displayed. London: Stephen Couchman, S. and E. Couchman, and Edward Couchman, for W. Curtis, 1793-1835. Volumes 1-62 bound in 38 volumes, 8° (254 x 158mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece and 3462 engraved plates, all but 3 hand-coloured with 315 of these folding, most volumes with deckle edges. (Occasional spotting, occasional offsetting onto the text, some leaves evenly yellowed.) Contemporary half calf rebacked to match in sheep (extremities rubbed, some scuffing on the spines). Provenance: George Brooke, engraved armorial bookplate; Henry Sotheran, booksellers ticket).

'THE MOST CELEBRATED OF ALL BOTANICAL MAGAZINES' (Cleveland Collections), and one of the oldest scientific periodicals of its type with hand-coloured engravings. 'In the beauty of production and high quality of its contributions it can claim a unique place' (Synge). 'The reputation of the magazine has always resided in the accuracy of its portrayal of plants... This pictorial record of garden and greenhouse plants from the temperate and tropical regions of the world has no rival' (Desmond). The work was immediately successful, and the early volumes, as here, were quickly reissued.
