WILLIAM SMITH (1769-1839)
Geological Map of Durham; on which are delinieated, by colours, the courses and width of the strata. London: G. and J. Cary, 1 March, 1824. Hand-coloured engraved folding linen-backed map (512 x 596mm) in 15 sections, verso of two sections with card to match accompanying original card slipcase, this with printed paper labels to upper and right hand sides as issued. (Verso of map with some minor spotting, slipcase rubbed at extremities and joints splitting but firm.)
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE; A SUPERB HAND-COLOURED GEOLOGICAL COUNTY MAP BY THE FOUNDER OF ENGLISH GEOLOGY showing the geological strata including the great coal fields of County Durham. 'One of the greatest figures of the nineteenth century' (Tooley), Smith produced the first geological map, with twenty-one of his county maps being published between 1819 and 1824. His work in the field was recognised in 1831 when he became the first recipient of the Geological Society of London's Wollaston Medal. Eyers 33; cf. PMM 274; Tooley Maps and Mapmakers, p.58; cf.
