Lot Essay

This is a reduced version -- formerly considered an autograph, small-scale replica -- of Girodet's celebrated The Sleep of Endymion (Paris, Louvre) of 1791. Girodet presented his masterpiece in the 1802 Paris Salon, where it was lauded by contemporary critics for its originality, strangeness, and poetic qualities.
