Details
GIVET and VONÊCHE, two leaves from the Album de Croÿ of Charles, 4th Duc d'Arschot, ILLUMINATED MINIATURES ON VELLUM
[Valenciennes] 1596-8
These leaves come from one of the two oldest of the famous set of twenty-four albums of views painted by Adrien Montigny (d.1615) of Valenciennes between 1596 and 1598 for Charles de Croÿ (1560-1612), 4th Duc d'Arschot, to record his vast landholdings in France and the Netherlands. Large payments to Adrien are documented in 1596 and 1601, including one 'for having painted all the villages'. Most of the albums were dispersed within a generation of Charles's death, but the album from which the present leaves came stayed in the Arenberg family until the 21st century, when it was sold at Sotheby's, 19 June, 2001, lot 47, and immediately broken up; one leaf was resold at Sotheby's, 29 June 2007, lot 17.
The bibliography on the albums is extensive and is listed in J.-M. Duvosquel, ed., Albums de Croÿ: propriétés des Croÿ, III, 1985 and Les albums de Croÿ: Exposition à la Bibliothèque royale Albert Ier, Brussels, 1979.
The leaves are described in lots 21 and 22. Should their reserve price as one lot not be reached, they will be offered separately at their individual estimates. (2)
