RUSSIA -- ALEXANDER II, Emperor of Russia (1855-81). Gramota [Grant of Nobility and Arms] in favour of Karl Karlovich [Charles Johann] von Freytag Loringhoven, in Russian, signed in Cyrillic 'Aleksandr', St. Petersburg: 11 June 1880.

Illuminated manuscript on vellum, 7 pages, 2° (430 x 305mm), the first leaf with illuminated border with the Imperial double-headed eagle and 45 coats-of-arms and introductory text printed in gold, the other pages with text in manuscript in black and gold within an illuminated border surmounted by the Emperor's cypher, the fifth page with an illuminated coat-of-arms, ivory silk guards. (Light marginal soiling, the guards spotted, two guards detached but present.) Original blue-green velvet, the side blind-stamped, with a gold-thread and brocade cord suspending a wax seal in a circular brass case, the detachable cover repoussé, chased and engraved with the Imperial arms, and two gold-thread tassels (corners rubbed). Provenance: Jozef Jastrzebski (bookplate).

A DECORATIVE GRANT OF ARMS AND NOBILITY SIGNED BY ALEXANDER II for service in the Crimean War of 1853-1856. Baron von Freytag Loringhoven (1816-1887), Governor of Ösel from 1867-1876, began his career by entering the Ministry of Foreign affairs in 1843; he was awarded the order of St Stanislas 1st Class in 1874.
