This stool-altar from the Bartos collection is beautifully and classically carved; the highly varied, softly worn and encrusted patina attests to years of use. The four ancestral figures, or nommo, symmetric and geometric, carved in relief appear to be female, each with a graceful arc. Here, the upper and lower echelons have the wave motif of rain/flowing water.

Lot Essay

Ce tabouret-autel de la collection Bartos est magnifiquement sculpté et de style classique. La patine très variée, doucement usée et incrustée, témoigne des années d'utilisation. Les quatre figures ancestrales, ou nommo, symétriques et géométriques, sculptées en relief semblent représenter des femmes, chacune tenant un arc gracieux. Ici, les échelons supérieurs et inférieurs sont décorés de courbes représentant la pluie, l'écoulement de l'eau.
