Lot Essay
The art of Arie Smit is full of joy and serenity. His colourful world is painted with brush-strokes which appear to move on the canvas, and invites the viewer to closer inspection and deeper contemplation. Arie Smit was born in 1916 in the Netherlands. After studying at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, he went to Jakarta to work as a lithographer in the topography service of the Dutch colonial army. Eventually Smit finally decided to move to Bali to fufill his desire of becoming a full-time artist. Never sated with discovering and exploring the beauty of the island, Arie Smit relocated himself in more than twenty different places within thirty years on the island. Within There is always something to sell (Lot 3506) Arie Smit paints a market place in a clearing, with a Balinese gate at the heart of the scene, serving as the foundational axis of the painting. The stippled approach Smit takes to painting creates the texture in the work that reflects light varyingly, adding to the vibrancy of the painting.
In the process of painting, Indonesian artist Rusli first explores his objects through thorough a process of keen observation He would then paint these objects onto canvas through transparent lines in empty spaces, maintaining a pure white background. Through his career, Rusli remained ceaseless in exploring and expanding his media of paintings, working in watercolour, oil, pen and acrylic. He also joined the Sanggar Pejeng to learn from genre artist, Dullah. His impressionist paintings employ a very solid impasto technique, which is unique to his style. Klenteng (Temple) is executed with the typical verve of the artist, with the view of the painting most coherent when facing the canvas full on. Awiki's choice of colours in his palette is not mixed, each one applied singularly onto the canvas with purity and thoughtfulness.
