Wolpe taught theory and composition at the Jerusalem Conservatory from 1934 until 1938: the discovery and exploration of his Jewish heritage had a profound impact, and a number of settings of Hebrew biblical texts as well as of Hebrew and Yiddish poets and folksongs date from this period. The present song is one of two settings from the Song of Songs which were first performed in Jerusalem (to a somewhat mixed reception) in 1936.
