JONSON, Benjamin (1572-1637). The Works... to which is added a comedy called the New Inn with additions never before published. London: by Thomas Hodgkin, for H. Herringman [and others], 1692. 2° (355 x 226mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Jonson by W. Elder. Without 3C3-3D4 as issued. (Some spotting and browning, a few short tears.) Contemporary calf, sides panelled in blind (rebacked, endpapers renewed, some scuffing, extremities rubbed.) Provenance: Richard Triplett (born c. 1610, ?brother of Thomas Triplett, Canon of Westminster; title signature).
The third folio edition, expanded with a number of works not in the earlier editions, including The New Inn, Leges convivales, an English grammar, and others. Ben Jonson's work has had lasting influence into the 20th century: James Joyce read every line of his work, and T.S. Eliot marvelled at the 'intelligent saturation in [Jonson's] work as a whole.'
