The present lot, depicting the profile of a woman with a tall black hat, is clearly related to Jean Dupas' painting 'Les Perruches,' his best known work. 'Les Perruches' was the focal point of the central room at Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann's Hôtel du Collectionneur -- the showcase for the finest French style of the period at the Parisian 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The here offered work is a detail of one of the five women portrayed in Dupas' masterpiece. While the subject of 'Les Perruches' is ambiguous, the women in this quintet may represent the five passions: True Love stands nude, caressing a dove; Trivial Love lies in the foreground, her arms extended towards the doves flying above; Innocence stands in a pink pattered dress, playing with parakeets; the woman standing in the dark dress may represent Jealousy; and Generosity, whose face and tall black hat are adorned with ribbon and flowers is depicted in the painting offered here, kneels in a blue dress, surrounded by fruit.
