Lot Essay

The set was originally designed by John Bell, for Minton, for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The factory re-issued the set in 1951 for the Commonwealth Exhibition. All the sets produced for the Commonwealth Exhibition were marked, however, it has been suggested that a number of sets were possibly produced without marks, for private use by the Minton factory.
