Lot Essay

The motorbike features in the thrilling opening action sequence of Skyfall which was filmed in Istanbul and Adana during 2012. Finding fellow MI6 agent Ronson critically wounded, Bond [Daniel Craig] gives chase to the mercenary Patrice who has stolen a computer hard drive containing details of undercover agents placed in terrorist organisations by NATO states. Crashing his car, Patrice seizes a police motorbike and takes off through the streets of the Grand Bazaar. Bond grabs a street merchant's motorbike and a high speed chase ensues, the bikes charging up narrow steps and racing over the rooftops of the city.

A total of twenty CRF250R motorcycles were provided by Honda and adapted by Chris Corbould's special effects team for the film. Some were 'dressed' as Turkish police motorbikes and others in street merchant motorbike guise. Two further CRF250R motorbikes were chosen for use as HD camera filming machines, as only another motorbike could allow the camera crew to keep up with the chase scene and follow the various stunts. Freestyle motocross legend Robbie Maddison doubled as Daniel Craig for the jaw-dropping stunt sequences.

Stunt Co-ordinator for SKYFALL, Gary Powell, commented, We needed a highly versatile and quality off-road motorbike that could be easily modified, without compromising performance or safety for the opening sequence of SKYFALL. Honda's CRFs are probably the best off-roaders out there so it's great that we've been able to partner with Honda as the bikes, whilst heavily modified, were superb to work with.

One of each motorbike have been retained by EON Productions for their archive and are currently on display, alongside a standard Honda CRF250R, at the Bond in Motion exhibition at the UK's National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. Similarly, one of each motorbike were retained by Honda to be auctioned to benefit their chosen charities.
