A FINE FRENCH SMALL-SWORD MADE FOR A MEMBER OF THE FRENCH ROYAL HOUSEHOLD
THIRD QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY
With blade of hollow triangular section etched with gilt scrollwork against a blued ground towards the forte, the gilt forte etched with a trophy of arms and a decorative panel, steel hilt chiselled in low relief with scrollwork and vignettes of animals all against a gilt punched ground including double symmetrical shell-guard with scenes comprising a hound chasing a bull and a fox startling a goose on the outer side, and a wolf pitted against a hound and two recumbent lions on the inner side, quillon-block with a seated wolf on one side and a hound standing over a duck on the other, a brace of geese on the knuckle-guard, and spherical pommel with a hound attacking a wolf and a second hound attacking a swan, short rear-quillon, and original grip bound with silver wire with Turk's heads, in original snakeskin-covered scabbard with chiselled and gilt iron mounts en suite with the hilt including the locket decorated with an eagle holding a laurel wreath in its beak on the outer side and a shield bearing three gold-inlaid fleur-de-lys bordered by scrollwork on the inner side, with two rings for suspension
