Lot Essay

A test from the assay office confirms that 'All items have sterling silver parts and are in the nineteenth Century date range' (with a 98 probability). A similar set of tools and a hearth broom in Ham House, lent by the trustees of the Victoria and Albert Museum are illustrated in Christopher Gilbert and Anthony Wells-Cole, The fashionable fireplace, 1985, fig. 24, 37. Inventories at Ham from 1677 to 1683 list several sets of tools 'done wt silver' and silver hearth brooms. The same book shows a similar bellows in a private collection, fig. 38
