Lot Essay

The son of Sir Percival Hart of Lullingstone, Kent, M.P., and his second wife, Jane, daughter of Sir Edward Stanhope, of Grimston, Yorkshire, M.P., the sitter was baptised on 22 July 1599 at Lullingstone and buried there on 15 November 1616. His great-grandfather and namesake, who died in 1580, was chief sewer and knight harbinger to four successive monarchs.
